Venomous snake bite? Check for a hospital with Antivenom in Bangalore after First Aid!

At least 80% of the snake bites occur when people try to kill or catch a snake, just 20% are accidents. Approximately 75,000 die of snakebites in the world and India contributes to 40% of these(~30,000/ year)





First Aid/How are snake bites treated?

  • Keep the person calm and seated.

  • Incase of a bite, rush to the nearest hospital, AFTER ENSURING anti-snake venom serum is available there. TIME IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE!

  • Call for emergency assistance immediately if someone has been bitten by a snake. Responding quickly in this type of emergency is crucial. While waiting for emergency assistance:

    • Wash the bite with soap and water

    • Immobilize the bitten area and keep it lower than the heart

    • Cover the area with a clean, cool compress or a moist dressing to minimize swelling and discomfort

  • Monitor vital signs

  • If a victim is unable to reach medical care within 30 minutes:

    • Apply a bandage, wrapped two to four inches above the bite, to help slow the venom. This should not cut off the flow of blood from a vein or artery - the band should be loose enough to slip a finger under it.

    • A suction device can be placed over the bite to help draw venom out of the wound without making cuts. These devices are often included in commercial snake bite kits.

    • Most often, physicians use antivenin -- an antidote to snake venom -- to treat serious snake bites. Antivenin is derived from antibodies created in a horse's blood serum when the animal is injected with snake venom. Because antivenin is obtained from horses, snake bite victims sensitive to horse products must be carefully managed.



Other Dos

  • Identifying a bite as a snakebite is vital. In most cases, a snakebite is not just two dots as shown in the movies, it is more like small scratches. The fangs point inwards, and when bitten the first tendency of a person is to withdraw that part of the body and that leaves scratches. Russell’s vipers leave puncture marks



  • Call the snake rescuer closest to your area


  • Call a hospital before you move the patient and first to enquire if they have the Anti Snake Venom Serum (ASVS), then take the bite victim there

  • Remove bangles, wrist-watch or any jewellery from the limb


  • Remove any tight clothing from the bitten area

  • The available polyvalent ASVS works for all 4 types of venomous snakes found in Bangalore, so there is no need to panic!



Don't



  • Donot cut the wound, donot try to suck the venom out

  • Donot give any pain killers or alcohol

  • Donot call local inexperienced snake catchers for snake rescue. You can call them for help, till official snake rescuers come!


  • Don’t panic, one person should take charge of the situation and reassure the patient 

  • Don’t try to catch the snake on your own

Prevention /Preventing snake bites:


Snakes come into the house through broken drain covers, open sumps, damaged sewage and water pipes, open windows and crevices under the doors. Sometimes clothes piled on the bathroom floor or several buckets or vessels on the floor are also a good hiding place for them.



  • Encourage the vets in your area to store anti-venom. 

  • Get rid of thick vegetation near the main door of the house and trim plants regularly, enabling a clear view of ground area.

  • Ensure that the drains, sumps, wells and pipes are well sealed and not defective



Some bites, such as those inflicted when you accidentally step on a snake in the woods, are nearly impossible to prevent. However, there are precautions that can reduce your chances of being bitten by a snake. These include:
  • Leave snakes alone. Many people are bitten because they try to kill a snake or get too close to it.

  • Stay out of tall grass unless you wear thick leather boots and remain on hiking paths as much as possible.

  • Keep hands and feet out of areas you cannot see. Do not pick up rocks or firewood unless you are out of a snake's striking distance.

  • Be cautious and alert when climbing rocks.

In case of Fire, what You should do?



  • Stay Calm

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a wet, clean cloth to prevent smoke inhalation injury and choking

  • In case of burns, cover the injury to prevent infections

  • Consume fluids as burns can lead to dehydration

  • Get used to the Fire Exits in your buildings, apartments

  • Move towards the exit slowly, as you inhale smoke faster when you run

  • Help people along. Keep a head count to ensure that nobody is left behind during emergency



what You should Not do?



  • Never jump off from heights. The sort of trampolines needed to jump off tall buildings maynot be available. It is never an option as it will mean certain death. It is better to remain calm and wait for the rescuers

  • Never attempt to climb down the side of a tall building. You are not trained for it

  • Use the lift as the power will be turned off or could fail anytime



what the building maintenance / owners association should do?



  • Planning mock drill at regular intervals to create awareness on procedures to be followed in times of an evacuation

  • Constantly updating fire safety equipment to include advanced gadgets

  • Installing glow signs and painting arrows on exit doors to guide people out of the building during emergency

  • Inviting experts to conduct workshops on fire fighting and evacuation of occupants

  • Upgrading maintenance of facilities

  • Never allow illegal constructions which block fire exits and inspect regularly to keep the stairways uncluttered

  • Provide oxygen masks in higher floors to help people with respiratory issues, incase of a fire

Best bluetooth headset. Radiation? Noise cancellation? Speech quality! Check this!

For a long time, I was researching to buy a bluetooth headset. Heard many horror stories of ear pain, reduced speech and audio quality, easily loosing the headsets. Invariably I saw everybody dumps the headset usage after initial enthusiasm and would use it rarely for long drives! Why? Any good headsets which addresses these issues? I decided to pilot my friend's jawbone bluetooth headset after using headsets from sony ericsson, plantronics, nokia and jabra.

No ear pains, as it comes with adjustable and very comfortable ear holders and so no chance to loose it as well. It is very important to see the manual and first understand where the button locations are, due to the very sleek and stylish design.

Tips to understand and avoid Mobile phone radiation, for your health!

If you are worried about the potential hazards of cell-phone radiation, here are few ways to reduce your risk:
  • Use a hands-free headset
  • Extend the antenna during use
  • Limit calls inside buildings
  • Avoid calls inside closed spaces like lift /elevator
  • Use the phone in open spaces as often as possible
  • Limit use by children. 
What are Radio waves? Radio waves transmit music, conversations, pictures and data invisibly through the air, often over millions of miles -- it happens every day in thousands of different ways! Even though radio waves are invisible and completely undetectable to humans, they have totally changed society. Whether we are talking about a cell phone, a baby monitor, a cordless phone or any one of the thousands of other wireless technologies, all of them use radio waves to communicate.

Transmitter and Antenna:
When talking on a cell phone, a transmitter takes the sound of your voice and encodes it onto a continuous sine wave. A sine wave is just a type of continuously varying wave that radiates out from the antenna and fluctuates evenly through space. Sine waves are measured in terms of frequency, which is the number of times a wave oscillates up and down per second. Once the encoded sound has been placed on the sine wave, the transmitter sends the signal to the antenna, which then sends the signal out.

Cell phones have low-power transmitters in them.The position of a transmitter inside a phone varies depending on the manufacturer, but it is usually in close proximity to the phone's antenna. The radio waves that send the encoded signal are made up of electromagnetic radiation propagated by the antenna. The function of an antenna in any radio transmitter is to launch the radio waves into space; in the case of cell phones, these waves are picked up by a receiver in the cell-phone tower.

All cell phones emit some amount of electromagnetic radiation.There are two types of electromagnetic radiation: Ionizing radiation - This type of radiation contains enough electromagnetic energy to strip atoms and molecules from the tissue and alter chemical reactions in the body. Gamma rays and X-rays are two forms of ionizing radiation. We know they cause damage, which is why we wear a lead vest when X-rays are taken of our bodies. Non-ionizing radiation - it is typically safe. It causes some heating effect, but usually not enough to cause any type of long-term damage to tissue. Radio-frequency energy, visible light and microwave radiation are considered non-ionizing.

The added concern with non-ionizing radiation, the type of radiation associated with cell phones, is that it could have long-term effects. Although it may not immediately cause damage to tissue, scientists are still unsure about whether prolonged exposure could create problems. This is an especially sensitive issue today, because more people are using cell phones than ever before.

At high levels, radio-frequency energy can rapidly heat biological tissue and cause damage such as burns, according to a recent report from the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO), a nonpartisan congressional agency that audits federal programs. The report went on to state that mobile phones operate at power levels well below the point at which such heating effects would take place. The amount of radiation emitted from the devices is actually minute, and the U.S. federal government places limits on how much radiation a cell phone can emit. Radiation levels are tested based on the specific absorption rate (SAR), which is a way of measuring the amount of radio-frequency energy that is absorbed by the human body. In order to gain license in US, a phone's maximum SAR level must be less than 1.6 watts per kilogram. It's still unclear as to whether cell phones actually cause any significant damage to the human body. Studies continue to contradict one another on the issue. Additional studies may shed some light on the true effects of cell-phone radiation, but will likely only confuse consumers even further. In the meantime, millions of cell-phone users take whatever risk may be involved in using the devices
