Mobile broadband - upto 50 billion devices connected by 2020

Mobile broadband market is now entering its second wave, where one size no longer fits all, mobile broadband is complementing fixed broadband rather than cannibalizing it, and prepaid and smartphones are fast emerging to join dongles. Service innovation, product differentiation and user experience - rather than pricing - will be the key factors going forward, according to industry sources.
  • Ericsson, the market leader predicts up to 50 billion devices are expected to be connected by 2020 and  some 3.4 billion will be broadband users by 2015 from a mere 360 million in 2009. 
  • Nokia Siemens Networks had much earlier predicted upto 5 billion devices connected by 2015. Latest reports indicate that  by July,2010 it is already achieved.

Mobile broadband is the name used to describe various types of wireless high-speed internet access through a portable modem, telephone or other device. The phrase "Mobile Broadband" is largely a wireless carrier marketing tool. The actual "non-Mobile Phone" Mobile networks are very small subscriber base (Mobile WiMax, iBurst, Flash-OFDMA, IPW and portable Satellite terminals) compared to Fixed Wireless Broadband. 

  • A misleading vendor tactic is to quote the peak Mast speed as the user speed. This is like quoting exchange total speed for DSL or total cable bandwidth for Cable users. It has little resemblance to real world performance.
  • Another misleading tactics often used by standards proponents are for eg. stating WiMax or Mobile broadband. WiMax other than splitting the available spectrum and is in trouble where most large telecom operators stopped any development on WiMax.
On 11 December 2002, the IEEE Standards Board approved the establishment of IEEE 802.20, the Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MBWA) Working Group.The mission of IEEE 802.20 is to develop the specification for an efficient packet based air interface that is optimized for the transport of IP based services. The goal is to enable worldwide deployment of affordable, ubiquitous, always-on and interoperable multi-vendor mobile broadband wireless access networks that meet the needs of business and residential end user markets.


The main barrier to the take up of mobile broadband will be the coverage the mobile phone networks can provide, in many areas customers will not be able to achieve the speeds advertised due to mobile data coverage limitations. In addition, there are also issues with connectivity, network capacity, application quality, and mobile network operators' overall inexperience with data traffic. Demand from emerging markets fuels a large share of growth in Mobile Broadband over the coming years. Without the need to start from the basis of a widespread fixed line infrastructure, many emerging markets leapfrog developed markets and use Mobile Broadband technologies to deliver high-speed internet access to the mass market.

The global Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of standards - which includes GSM, EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA and LTE – is the most widespread way to deliver mobile broadband. 3GPP standards are serving about 90 percent of the world’s mobile subscribers.

Mobile and Landline phone : National Donot call registry of India

A Mobile or landline subscriber who does not wish to receive telemarketing calls, can request their telephone number be included in the NDNC Registry. Such request are sent through their telecom service providers which will be stored in National Do Not Call Registry.Subscribers can make a Do Not Call requests via Letter, phone, SMS or on-line.

The telephone number "1909" is designated for registering your request in the National Do Not Call Registry. Registrations can be done either by calling or sending SMS with keywords "START DND" to "1909". Telephone calls/SMSs to this number are FREE of cost. The telecom service provider will acknowledge the request within ten days. Requests will become effective in 45 days from the date of request.


Q&A: The National Do Not Call Registry (extracts from official Q&A)

1. What is UCC?

“Unsolicited Commercial Communication” means any message, through telecommunications service, which is transmitted for the purpose of informing about, or soliciting or promoting any commercial transaction in relation to goods, investments or services which a subscriber opts not to receive, but does not include, ----

(i) any message (other than promotional message) relating to a service or financial transaction under a specific contract between the parties to such contract; or
(ii) any messages relating to charities, national campaigns or natural
calamities transmitted on the directions of the Government or agencies authorized by it for the said purpose;
(iii) any message transmitted, on the directions of the Government or any authority or agency authorized by it, in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign
States, public order, decency or morality.

2. What is the National Do Not Call Registry?

The NDNC Registry is a database having the list of all telephone numbers of the subscribers who do not want to receive UCC. Telephone subscriber (Landline or mobile) who does not wish to receive UCC, can register their telephone number with their telecom service provider for inclusion in the NDNC. Telecom Service Provider shall upload the telephone number to the NDNC within 45 days of receipt. The Telemarketer will have to verify their calling telephone numbers list with the NDNC registry before making a call.

3. What is the procedure for registering in National Do Not Call Registry?

You can register your number in NDNC registry by calling or sending SMS to toll-free 1909 saying ‘START DND’. The registration will become effective within 45 days from the date of registration.

4. When can I file a do not call complaint and what details should be given in the complaint?

If your number has been on the National Do Not Call Registry for at least 45 days and you receive a call from a telemarketer, you can file a complaint within 15 days from the receipt of UCC Calls/SMS with full details to your service provider. The details must include the call originating number, date/time of the call and type of commercial message.

The complainant should insist for the complaint No. which should be kept for further reference.

5. What happens to my complaint?

On receipt of UCC, you should make a complaint to your service provider intimating the call originating number, date/time of the call and type of commercial message you received, within 15 days from the receipt of UCC. You may insist service provider for complaint number, for future reference. As per regulations, the service provider has to intimate the action taken, to the complainant within 28 days (in case of UCC belongs to his own Telemarketer) and 35 days (in case of Telemarketer is of other service provider) from receipt of the complaint.

6. How can I make complaint, if I receive UCC by SMS through alphanumeric identifier and without normal ten digit mobile?

You may make the complaint as specified in the Ans. to Q. 5 above, as it is mandatory to all commercial SMSs, which are sent with only identification and without the normal ten digit mobile numbers to prefix the service provider code and the code of the service area provided to the service provider (for example XY-HSBC, where X stands for service provider and Y stands for service area).

7. How soon after I register will I notice a reduction in calls?

After 45 days from the date of registration.

8. What if I change my mind? Can I take my number off the National Do Not Call Registry?

You can de-register your phone number from NDNC by calling or sending SMS to toll-free 1909 saying ‘STOP DND‘. It will be removed from the National Do Not Call Registry within next 45 days.

9. If I register by phone, will I receive a confirmation?

Yes, you will get registration number from your service provider.

10. If I choose to register my phone number, how will that information be helpful for reducing UCC?

Your registered phone number is stored in the National Do Not Call

Registry so that all telemarketers can remove your phone number from their call lists. Registered Telemarketers are required to scrub the callers list with the registry and delete from their call lists phone numbers that are registered in the registry.

11. Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry?

Yes, you may place your cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in Oct 2007.

12. Can I register all my family and friends?

One should register their telephone numbers with their Handset only.

13. I have more than three personal telephone numbers. How can I register all of those numbers?

You can register only one phone number each time you call the Service Provider, and you must call from the phone number you wish to register.

You will receive a separate confirmation SMS/by call for each number you wish to register as per the case may be.

14. Can I register my business phone number?

The National Do Not Call Registry is open for all types of phones.

15. How long does my phone number stay registered?

Until the telephone number is disconnected or deregistered from the registry.

16. I moved and got a new phone number. Do I need to register the new number?

Yes.

17. Do I need to take my old phone number off the list when I get a new number?

Though, the service provider are required to remove the number from NDNC, after deactivation but it is preferable if you de-register your old number if you are changing it.

18. What happens if my phone number is disconnected and then reconnected?

If your number is disconnected and then reconnected, you may need to re-register.

19. My number is on the National Do Not Call Registry. After I bought something from a company, a telemarketer representing that organization called me. Is this a violation?

Even if your number is registered in NDNC registry, you can receive any message (other than promotional message) relating to a service or financial transaction under a specific contract between the parties to such
contract.

20. I’m happy to have the choice to limit telemarketing contacts, but there are some telemarketing calls I don’t mind receiving. Is there a way to allow only certain companies to call?

No, Presently NDNC do not have a provision for selective telemarketing.

Best bluetooth headset. Radiation? Noise cancellation? Speech quality! Check this!

For a long time, I was researching to buy a bluetooth headset. Heard many horror stories of ear pain, reduced speech and audio quality, easily loosing the headsets. Invariably I saw everybody dumps the headset usage after initial enthusiasm and would use it rarely for long drives! Why? Any good headsets which addresses these issues? I decided to pilot my friend's jawbone bluetooth headset after using headsets from sony ericsson, plantronics, nokia and jabra.

No ear pains, as it comes with adjustable and very comfortable ear holders and so no chance to loose it as well. It is very important to see the manual and first understand where the button locations are, due to the very sleek and stylish design.

My favourite model and what I strongly recommend Jawbone, based on my piloting experience and  research  on price and usage experience of other headset models.

Tips to understand and avoid Mobile phone radiation, for your health!

If you are worried about the potential hazards of cell-phone radiation, here are few ways to reduce your risk:
  • Use a hands-free headset
  • Extend the antenna during use
  • Limit calls inside buildings
  • Avoid calls inside closed spaces like lift /elevator
  • Use the phone in open spaces as often as possible
  • Limit use by children. 
What are Radio waves? Radio waves transmit music, conversations, pictures and data invisibly through the air, often over millions of miles -- it happens every day in thousands of different ways! Even though radio waves are invisible and completely undetectable to humans, they have totally changed society. Whether we are talking about a cell phone, a baby monitor, a cordless phone or any one of the thousands of other wireless technologies, all of them use radio waves to communicate.

Transmitter and Antenna:
When talking on a cell phone, a transmitter takes the sound of your voice and encodes it onto a continuous sine wave. A sine wave is just a type of continuously varying wave that radiates out from the antenna and fluctuates evenly through space. Sine waves are measured in terms of frequency, which is the number of times a wave oscillates up and down per second. Once the encoded sound has been placed on the sine wave, the transmitter sends the signal to the antenna, which then sends the signal out.

Cell phones have low-power transmitters in them.The position of a transmitter inside a phone varies depending on the manufacturer, but it is usually in close proximity to the phone's antenna. The radio waves that send the encoded signal are made up of electromagnetic radiation propagated by the antenna. The function of an antenna in any radio transmitter is to launch the radio waves into space; in the case of cell phones, these waves are picked up by a receiver in the cell-phone tower.

All cell phones emit some amount of electromagnetic radiation.There are two types of electromagnetic radiation: Ionizing radiation - This type of radiation contains enough electromagnetic energy to strip atoms and molecules from the tissue and alter chemical reactions in the body. Gamma rays and X-rays are two forms of ionizing radiation. We know they cause damage, which is why we wear a lead vest when X-rays are taken of our bodies. Non-ionizing radiation - it is typically safe. It causes some heating effect, but usually not enough to cause any type of long-term damage to tissue. Radio-frequency energy, visible light and microwave radiation are considered non-ionizing.

The added concern with non-ionizing radiation, the type of radiation associated with cell phones, is that it could have long-term effects. Although it may not immediately cause damage to tissue, scientists are still unsure about whether prolonged exposure could create problems. This is an especially sensitive issue today, because more people are using cell phones than ever before.

At high levels, radio-frequency energy can rapidly heat biological tissue and cause damage such as burns, according to a recent report from the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO), a nonpartisan congressional agency that audits federal programs. The report went on to state that mobile phones operate at power levels well below the point at which such heating effects would take place. The amount of radiation emitted from the devices is actually minute, and the U.S. federal government places limits on how much radiation a cell phone can emit. Radiation levels are tested based on the specific absorption rate (SAR), which is a way of measuring the amount of radio-frequency energy that is absorbed by the human body. In order to gain license in US, a phone's maximum SAR level must be less than 1.6 watts per kilogram. It's still unclear as to whether cell phones actually cause any significant damage to the human body. Studies continue to contradict one another on the issue. Additional studies may shed some light on the true effects of cell-phone radiation, but will likely only confuse consumers even further. In the meantime, millions of cell-phone users take whatever risk may be involved in using the devices

The way fungus like slime moulds grow, could inspire design of wireless, transport and communication network engineering!

Scientists drew this conclusion after observing a slime mould as it grew into a network that was almost identical to the Tokyo rail system.


The scientists describe their ideas for "biologically inspired networks" in a science journal, as quoted by BBC. They have incorporated the slime mould's efficient strategy into a mathematical formula. This "slime formula" could help engineers develop better, more efficient designs.



Mould solves maze One of the researchers, Dr Mark Fricker from Oxford University, UK, attributed the whole idea of using slime moulds in this way, to Toshiyuki Nakagaki, a scientist also based at Hokkaido University. A decade ago, Dr Nakagaki showed that the slime could find the most efficient way through a maze, writes BBC.


The work provides a fascinating and convincing example that biologically inspired mathematical models can lead to completely new, highly efficient algorithms.The way fungus like slime moulds grow, could inspire design of wireless, transport and communication network engineering!

Mobile phones of 2015 : Flexible, self cleaning, advanced motion recognition - based on nanotechnology

Nokia has filed a patent application with the US Patent Office for a flexible mobile phone with motion recognition technology.


A patent application entitled user interface, device and method for a physically flexible device talks about the possibility of bending a handset into various shapes such as a shape of can, bowl or a roof for triggering shortcuts. Nokia has introduced a further modifier in the shape of motion-recognition, writes telecompaper.Alternatively the handset could assign different modifiers to different corners being bent initially, or indeed the position, angle, speed or sharpness of the bend. The point at which the phone is bent could be used to select on-screen graphics rather than requiring a traditional touch-screen.


In Feb 25,2008, Nokia Research Center(NRC), in cooperation with Cambridge Nanoscience Centre in Great Britain, has developed and unveiled the Morph mobile phone concept of the future, which is based on nanotechnology.The mobile phone of the future will be flexible, transparent and self-cleaning. The concept introduces revolutionary steps in developing a generation of mobile devices that will create totally new methods of wireless communication. According to the vision, a mobile phone will be made of flexible and transparent electronics that will make it possible to stretch a device into a suitable form and appearance that is in accordance with the intended usage.


Thanks to nanotechnology the surface of the mobile phone of the future can be self-cleaning material. The surface can also operate as a solar cell that keeps the highly developed and small batteries of the telephone always charged. Moreover, the telephone could include sensors that gather information about their environment, helping users to protect themselves against pollution and harmful substances.


The Morph concept won the internationally recognized red dot award in the design concept category in Singapore in November 2008. Red dot is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world, and there were more than 1,900 entries last year.


Nokia had earlier said that such technologies will be the norm by 2015.

Need for Whitespace Databases

US Federal Communications Commission(FCC) is been urged by major telecom companies to open up the 'white spaces' — small amounts of spectrum between broadcast television channels — to unlicensed use.

The idea behind the databases is to avoid creating interference with television broadcasts and other wireless technologies.There are two types of databases that will be needed for this project:
  • geolocation
  • spectrum-sensing technology
Recently, Google has announced that the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC" or "Commission") designate Google to be administrator of a TV bands geolocation database."

AMOLED Mobile display technology - Active-matrix OLED

Active-matrix OLED (Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode or AMOLED) is a display technology for use in mobile devices such as mobile phones.

OLED describes a specific type of ultra thin, ultra bright display technology which doesn't require a backlight. 

Active-Matrix refers to the technology behind the addressing of pixels. AMOLED technology continues to make progress towards low-power and low-cost large size (e.g. 40-inch) for applications such as TV. Eg.Nexus One Android phone from Google.

  • Greatly minimized propensity for breakage

Managed Service Business Model for femtocells

The femtocell operation is very tightly integrated with many different aspects of the network operator's internal systems and staff. To me, this is a good thought process now, and would wait for few mass market customer rollouts to have this evolved.

Femto business case - for operators and end users i.e you?!

What Femto customers get for their money, at least at the start, is better indoor coverage, but service providers intends to launch more advanced services later.

itbusinessedge.com cites reports that Kineto Wireless is hoping to use femtocells in conjunction with its unlicensed mobile access (UMA) software that knits together cellular and unlicensed wireless services.

It also reports about the competition to femtocells against repeaters. 3G and 4G signals generally use higher frequencies than 2G and 2.5G, and thus will have even more trouble inside structures. Repeaters and femtocells both improve inside coverage, albeit in different ways. Femtocells,add capacity to the macro network while repeaters simply enable the network to more closely approach its established theoretical limit. The post looks at two of the main types of repeaters and contrasts them to femtocells.

Also, Cable operators are cited as a great potential user of femtocells, since a good deal of their infrastructure is in homes and apartments. Such settings can benefit greatly from femtocell's ability to extend effective coverage and to integrate wireless and cellular networks.


Strong business case and customer acceptance yet to be proven  for mass market commercial deployments. Femto rollouts, partly due to recession of 2008-2010, faces lots of stumbling blocks with customer acceptance and commercial deployments. Negotiations, standardisations and trials are ongoing with different industry partners to make femto cell services beneficial and a reality.

Mobile phone from Google - Nexus One

Google has launched its first mobile phone, the Nexus One, as well as its own web store to market the device. It would cost online around USD 529. 


Google said it's looking to change the way consumers buy phones, and the company plans to expand the web store with more Android phones as well as a range of operator service plans. Made by HTC, the Nexus One features a Qualcomm 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and a 3.7-inch Amoled touch screen. The 130g, 11.5mm phone comes with a 5 megapixel camera with auto zoom, GPS, accelerometer, light and proximity sensors, a 4GB memory card expandable to 32 GB, trackball navigation, HSPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. 


The phone runs on the Android 2.1 operating system with the full range of Google services installed, access to the Google Market, speech recognition for voice commands and integrated messaging and contacts list.

  • T-Mobile USA will offer a subsidised version for USD 179 with a two-year service plan. 
  • Google is also developing a CDMA version for Verizone US. 
  • Vodafone said it will soon introduce the handset in the UK, followed by other markets in Europe in 2010
